What Is the PanOptix® Lens? A Guide to Trifocal Vision After Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are a natural part of aging, but today’s advanced lens technology makes it possible to restore clear vision—and often reduce dependence on glasses—after cataract surgery. One of the most innovative options available is the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL).

Approved for use in the United States in 2019 and successfully implanted in Europe since 2015, the PanOptix lens has quickly become a popular choice for patients seeking a wider range of vision and greater visual freedom after cataract removal.

What Is the PanOptix® Trifocal IOL?

The PanOptix® lens is the first and only trifocal intraocular lens approved in the U.S. Unlike traditional monofocal lenses that focus at a single distance, PanOptix is designed to provide three distinct focal points:

  • Distance vision (driving, watching TV)
  • Intermediate vision (computer work, dashboards)
  • Near vision (reading, smartphones)

This trifocal design allows light to be distributed efficiently to each focal range, helping patients see clearly at most distances without constantly reaching for glasses.

How Is PanOptix Different from Older Multifocal Lenses?

Earlier generations of multifocal lenses typically focused on distance and near vision but offered limited intermediate (mid-range) clarity. As a result, many patients still needed glasses for computer use or daily tasks performed at arm’s length.

Some older lenses were also associated with higher rates of visual disturbances such as glare, halos, and starbursts, especially at night.

The PanOptix Trifocal IOL was developed to overcome these challenges by:

  • Improving intermediate (computer) vision
  • Reducing glare, halos, and starbursts compared to earlier multifocal lenses
  • Delivering more balanced, natural vision across all distances

Advanced ENLIGHTEN® Optical Technology

PanOptix uses ENLIGHTEN® Optical Technology, a proprietary design that optimizes how light is used inside the eye. This technology allows for:

  • Excellent near, intermediate, and distance vision
  • High total light utilization for clearer vision in both bright and dim conditions
  • Improved visual performance during daytime and nighttime activities

By efficiently distributing light, ENLIGHTEN technology helps maintain visual clarity without compromising contrast or comfort.

Who Is a Good Candidate for PanOptix?

PanOptix may be a great option for patients who:

  • Are undergoing cataract surgery
  • Want to reduce dependence on glasses or contacts
  • Spend time reading, using computers, or working on digital devices
  • Desire clear vision at multiple distances
  • Have healthy eyes aside from cataracts (your surgeon will evaluate this)

While PanOptix is an excellent option for many patients, it isn’t the best choice for everyone. A comprehensive eye exam and consultation are essential to determine which lens best fits your lifestyle, vision needs, and eye health.
